CALEDON ANNIVERSARY SHOW Noon Today

Today rather than Baroque Blues, I am pleased to host the unveiling and reception for the Caledon Rose 2009. The rose is exclusive to Caledon and only 26 of them have been made. I will be playing Caledon's Favorite music: Celtic and Pipes both traditional and new. Please join me in world at Snook's Garden Centre, Morgaine for a fun filled time of dancing and celebration.

Sir Omicron Llewellyn made the Rose and Denver Hax will be hiding it through out Caledon for our Traditional and annual Rose Hunt. The first clue will be given at the party....
See you there...

Oh.. And By The Way... here is an exclusive.. a picture of the rose.

From the Library: Happy Birthday, Caledon!

Today in Second Life, the world's most popular and successful metaverse, we celebrate the third anniversary of the Independent State of Caledon, a unique Steampunk Victorian region founded by The Guvnah, Desmond Shang, exactly three years ago today. It's also where Radio Riel was originally established.

This is how the Caledon Wiki describes it:

Caledon is a small, windswept forested country at a temperate latitude. Wild creatures, country estate life, sights and sounds that were common well over 100 years ago are the hallmark of the land.

Technology is approximately that of the 19th Century, though some astonishing breakthroughs have provided for incredible wonders. Ground vehicles, airships, and even a device known as a 'telehub' are made possible through the power of exotic material properties and the wonders of Steam Technology.

The government is an expansionist monarchy, supported by a strong aristocracy (i.e., residents).

As Caledon has grown, it has made contact with a number of other nations that share many of her values. Some of these nations now share direct sea passage and have formed a coalition known as the Realm of the Roses to promote their mutual interests.

Join us in today's celebrations either by visiting one of several events in-world or by tuning in to a programme of suitably Celtic music on Radio Riel's Main Stream.

From the Library is produced in conjunction with the Caledon Library; today's programme was produced by Elrik Merlin. You can listen to it on our Main Stream as follows:

World Wednesday: The Music from Slumdog Millionaire

A few weeks ago, Otenth announced that he was going to be out of town this week, and he asked if any of us at Radio Riel would like to guest-host World Wednesday for today. I took one look at the calendar and jumped at the chance, because I knew *exactly* what I wanted to play...

Join me tonight, on the roof of Radio Riel Headquarters in Edison Hypatia (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Edison%20Hypatia/95/101/50) from 6-7pm SLT as I play the soundtrack from the movie "Slumdog Millionaire". I had a sneaking suspicion that "Slumdog" was going to win a lot of Oscars...which it did, including Best Picture, Best Song and Best Score.

So come dance on the roof at Radio Riel HQ with me to this fabulous music! If you can not join us, you can tune in at http://snow.slserver.com:9012/live .

Something New: Open Office Hours for Gabrielle

Starting today, I encourage Staff and Listeners to come talk to me about Radio Riel during my weekly, open Office Hours.

All times are Second Life Time (SLT), which is also North American Pacific Standard Time

Tuesdays
12:00pm - 2:00pm SLT

Thursdays
7:00pm - 9:00pm SLT

Radio Riel Headquarters in Edison Hypatia

From the Library: La Musique Française

Today we continue the French influence but in a manner far distant from the music of Mardi Gras. Instead in today's programme we can feast our ears on the music of some of the most memorable of French composers.

We will be including works by Rameau, a personal favourite, as well as Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc, Fauré (another favourite), Satie, Berlioz and Chopin.

Most of the performances are traditional, but there will be some modern interpretations too, such as the music of Isao Tomita and some light jazz.

The picture shows one of Monet's many paintings of the Japanese Bridge in his garden at Giverny.

Riel Radio Theatre - The Lord of the Rings, Episode 7

Riel Radio Theatre presents part seven of BBC Radio 4's dramatisation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings - "The King of the Golden Hall".

Adapted for radio by Brian Sibley and Michael Bakewell.

Thursday 19th of February starting at 7:00 pm SLT

Join us at Radio Riel's HQ at Edison Hypatia to listen with the rest of us or tune your music player of choice to http://66.186.45.115:9012/live if you can't make it in person.

From the Library: More English Folk

Elrik Merlin writes:

Having received a number of positive comments on the playlist yesterday, I decided to select some additional material from my library for today's show – thus the title.

So today we are featuring some more English folk artists, including the complete released works of Nick Drake (shown left), sadly lost after a career of just five years, from 1969 until his untimely death in 1974, who is now rightly regarded as a major influence on the British music scene and is much more popular than he was at the time. If you don't know him, read about him here. You'll also hear selected Fairport Convention, the deeply moving recordings of Kate Rusby (she consistently moves me to tears, and who could not be so moved, listening to a song like My Young Man?) and others such as the talented songwriter Tony Hazzard (whom I suppose can be classified as Folk Rock). I've also included a personal modern favourite, Caroline Lavelle, whom I strongly recommend.

I was asked yesterday why I didn't play anything from Karine Polwart – well of course she is Scottish, but I also love her music, so she is in the playlist today. I've also included Kathryn Tickell's Northumbrian pipes. And when I came along at midnight SLT to update the programme this morning, we were playing The Sea by Fotheringay – one of my favourite tracks of all time – and I was again reminded what a marvel it is, with Sandy Denny's soaring vocals and eerie lyrics. So I left the one and only Fotheringay album in the list.

To leaven the mix in an historical direction, I've also included some traditional sea-chanteys and English songs down the ages from Greensleeves to Keep the Home Fires Burning.

Once again, I hope you enjoy today's show.

World Wednesdays: Mother Africa

World Wednesdays, 6-7pm SLT at the Radio Riel Listening Room and Music Library on Wyre, or listen at http://66.186.45.115:9012/live. Tonight: an incomplete survey of African music.

From the Library: The Folk of England

Elrik Merlin writes:

When I heard Otenth playing Gillian Welch yesterday, it struck me that it's some time since I did a programme of folk music from my side of the Pond, and particularly from England (I do play quite a lot of Celtic music). So I started sorting through my library to build a good 24-hour playlist. I stopped when it got to 35, and then cut it back a bit - but it's still too long, so you'll hear some more on another occasion. There is plenty more where today's show came from.

So today, we'll hear some of the best of English folk, from the late Fifties onwards, primarily. Though there are bound to be some oddities. For example, I want you to hear June Tabor's moving version of Maggie Holland's A Proper Sort of Gardener, and on the same album is Di Nakht, a song in Yiddish written in New York in 1929 and also very moving in a very different way. Am I going to exclude it? Well, no. There are also a couple of compilation albums, such as Anthems in Eden, including artists who are by no means exclusively English. But the general thread is one that winds its way through the English folk scene over the past 40 years or so, from people like Ewan MacColl (pictured above with Peggy Seeger and others) to tracks from The Imagined Village, an album of modern re-workings of classic folk songs.

I do hope you enjoy it.

RAYdio Bradbury Program 01: The October Country - 6pm SLT

Alliance Virtual Library, Alliance Library System, TAP Information Services and Radio Riel proudly present: RAYdio Bradbury, a four part series of programs focusing on four works by Ray Bradbury. Leading the discussions are Dr. Loren Logsdon professor of English at Eureka College and Bradbury scholar and Tom Peters, CEO of TAP Information Services.

Please join us in the Bradburyville Sim at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bradburyville/38/19/24 or tune in at http://66.186.45.115:9012/live.

The RAYdio Bradbury Programs are scheduled at 6 pm SLT, 8 PM central, 9 PM Eastern on the second Thursday of each month: February 12, March 12, April 9, and May 14. Books for discussion are October Country, The Martian Chronicles, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and I Sing the Body Electric. Radio Riel will broadcast each program on the Internet. Programs are free and everyone is welcome to attend! For more information, please contact Lori Bell at the Alliance Library System at 309-694-9200 ext. 2128 or at lbell@alliancelibrarysystem.com.

Our first program, The October Country, according to Bradbury, is his purest work of fantasy. Halloween is his favorite time of the year, and the stories in this book take place in a country defined by its psychological state rather than its geography.

From The Library - Smooth Jazz

Hello and welcome to somewhat of a departure from the norm here on Radio Riel: a day of relaxing contemporary music from the smooth end of the jazz spectrum, with somewhat of a bias towards keyboards. If your week has been a bit hectic so far, then kick back and enjoy some smooth instrumental moods.

Well, mainly smooth, anyway – there are some tracks that kick up the tempo a bit to help you through the day. Almost exclusively instrumental, so if you need to focus, read, write, study, build… there are few lyrics to intrude. All in all, here's a soundtrack to your Second (or First) Life for a Thursday.

Artists include Suzanne Ciani, David Benoit, Exchange, Jim Chappell, Billy Barber, Ian Lynn, Acoustic Alchemy and many more.

From The Library is presented by Radio Riel in conjunction with the Caledon Library in Second Life, and today's programme was produced by Elrik Merlin. For more information on the Caledon Library, current exhibits and the work of Second Life reference libraries in general, please visit the Caledon Library Web site, or one of their locations in-world.

World Wednesdays: Strings!

How many stringed instruments can I fit into an hour? Come listen and find out!

World Wednesdays, 6-7pm SLT at the Radio Riel Listening Room and Music Library on Wyre, or listen on our Secondary Stream (which is at http://snow.slserver.com:9012 until we can get the music2.radioriel.org address working again).

From the Library: Entente Cordiale

To celebrate the launch of Radio Riel New Toulouse, we are pleased to present for you today on our Main Stream a selection of classical music from Britain and France in our series From the Library.

In fact the emphasis is somewhat more on the French. However, we will be hearing from a number of British composers such as Elgar, Vaughan Williams and of course Frederic Delius, who, while born in England, spent the latter part of his life across the Channel.

From the French side we will be featuring Poulenc, Fauré, Chopin (who was Polish born but became a French citizen) Debussy, Ravel and Berlioz, with performances both traditional and not so.

We also have a selection of cross-channel pieces in a somewhat lighter vein.

Today, we think of the Entente Cordiale ("Cordial Understanding") as simply some kind of vague "special relationship" between Britain and France, but the term originally commemorated the recognition of common interests between Britain and France in the mid-1840s and, in particular, King Louis-Philippe's efforts to build political bridges between France and other European powers who had largely ostracised the French.

A meeting between the French and English sovereigns was organised at the Château d’Eu in September 1843, with Louis-Philippe visiting Queen Victoria a year later in Windsor Castle. A third and last meeting was held in Eu in 1845. The picture above is one of a series by Provost-Dumarchais commemorating the event.

However the usual meaning of the term refers to the second Entente - a series of Anglo-French agreements signed on 8 April 1904 and resulting in the end of recurring conflict between the two and the beginning of the period of peaceful co-existence that has lasted to the present day.

From The Library is presented by Radio Riel in conjunction with the Caledon Library in Second Life, and today's programme was produced by Elrik Merlin. Victoria Bush Fire Appeal

If you have caught the news over the last few days, you'll know that there have been terrible bush fires raging in Victoria, Australia, that have left vast areas devastated. Almost 200 people are known to have lost their lives – the toll will doubtless rise as more bodies are discovered – and many homes have been destroyed. And it's not over yet. We also know that at least one Caledon resident has lost her RL farm in the fires.

If Radio Riel listeners and their friends would like to make a donation to support the emergency work in Victoria, here is a link to the official web site for donations. This appeal is a joint effort between the Red Cross and the Victorian Government:

https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp

There is a pop-up menu allowing you to select the Appeal - choose "Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009".

For more information, read the message from the Premier of Victoria here.

Please forward the Donations URL to your friends. Our thoughts go out to the people of Victoria.

From the Library - The Early Music Show

In today's Early Music Show, we feature music of the Renaissance from across Western Europe, from Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

You'll be hearing both "loud" and "soft" bands - the former including brass instruments such as the sackbutt (a proto-trombone), shawm (a wooden reed instrument that is the predecessor of the oboe, brought to Europe from the Arab lands), rauschpfeife (an astonishingly loud capped-reed instrument in which, like a bagpipe chanter, the reed is enclosed and never touches the lips, in contrast to the shawm) and various forms of percussion, usually heard outdoors – not to mention bagpipes; while the latter includes quieter indoor instruments like the crumhorn, recorders, various stringed instruments and occasional keyboards.

In this programme we will be focusing on renditions of Early Music by some of the masters of the field, such as the late David Munrow, Ulsamer Collegium and Musica Reservata, covering both sacred and secular music (though with an emphasis on the latter).

World Wednesdays: Romani and Gypsy

I'll be playing Romani- and gypsy-inspired music tonight for my World Wednesdays show, 6-7pm SLT. Come on over to the Radio Riel Listening Room and Music Library on Wyre or listen at http://music2.radioriel.org.

From The Library - A Traditional Dance Festival

Today's programme features a collection of traditional dance tunes, some of which go back many centuries. Revived today in the form of Morris dancing and related genres such as English Country Dance (ECD), many of the tunes are familiar and popular today once again, as they were in the 16th century when the dances that became ECD were developed among the gentry, influenced by the folk dances of the time.

We will be featuring some of the work of modern popularisers of these genres, notably Ashley Hutchings, including his Compleat Dancing Master and other albums such as excerpts from the Morris On series, which often interleave (somewhat modernised) renditions of the pieces with readings from contemporary writings illustrating the attitudes of those in authority down the centuries to the popular pastime of dancing – many of which were downright hostile. We also couldn't resist throwing in Richard Thompson and Philip Pickett's lively album The Bones Of All Men, which essentially does for Renaissance dance music what Ashley Hutchings does for ECD – namely, rock it up.

In addition we include our fine collection of English country dance music performed by the renowned American ECD Instrumental Quartet, Bare Necessities, and kindly donated to Radio Riel by the Caledon Library.

Click here to learn more about the recordings produced by Bare Necessities and here to learn more about their "English Country Dance" recordings produced for the CDS Boston Centre series.

You will also hear performances by such artists as Maggie Sansone, Paul O'Dette and others, including some beautiful folk/dance contributions from Jennifer Cutting and The New St. George, and a collection of English National Songs from the Broadside Band.

Welcome to the Riel Communities New Toulouse!

Today, Radio Riel is presenting a special program in honor of the newest part of the Riel Communities: New Toulouse! Last week the sims of New Toulouse and New Toulouse Algiers transferred into the ownership of Gabrielle Riel. We are pleased to bring the New Taloosters into the family, along with the Riel Audiophiles and the Edisonians.

New Toulouse is based on New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th Century, roughly from 1900 - 1920, and one of the most special parts of New Orleans (from *any* era) is its music. The addition of New Toulouse will enable Radio Riel to play more early Jazz and Cajun music in the future.

Today, you will hear Ragtime, Dixieland Jazz, Early New Orleans Style Jazz and Blues from artists such as Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, James P. Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton.

Today's program originates from the music library of Gabrielle Riel. You can listen to the program now by clicking here.
